According to data released by Statistics Austria in recognition of World Cancer Day (February 4) in 2024, approximately 45,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Austria each year. This figure is expected to rise to around 50,000 annual cases by 2030. By that same year, the total number of individuals living with cancer in the country is projected to reach 460,000—an increase of 15% compared to 2022. The most frequently diagnosed cancers include breast cancer among women and prostate cancer among men. Age continues to be a significant risk factor, and Statistics Austria projects that the population aged 75 and older will increase by 16% between 2020 and 2030, and by nearly 60% by 2040. The combination of an aging population and increasing cancer incidence is driving heightened demand for advanced cancer therapies in Austria.
To address this challenge, the Austrian government has implemented several measures to improve cancer care. The Austrian Cancer Plan outlines key strategic areas such as prevention, early diagnosis, treatment enhancement, and improving the quality of life for cancer patients. These efforts aim to expand access to modern treatments and elevate the overall standard of cancer care across the country.
