The Japanese beer sector is the fourth biggest beer market in the world. In recent years, the Japanese beer sector has been witnessing a slowdown in volume and sales of beer. Sales of craft beer, though, is the only exception to this otherwise stagnant market.

In June 2017, the Japanese government carried out amendments to the Liquor tax to restrict retailer discounting of alcohol. The bill brought about a sharp increase in prices, causing consumers to turn towards alternatives of beer such as non-alcoholic beer, and spirit-based ready-to-drink beverages.

This new amendment is only expected to bring about a decrease in both total retail sales and total volume of beer in Japan until 2020 at least, following which beer sales are expected to witness a slow rise.
