The increasing adoption of minimally invasive surgeries and advancements in microcatheter technologies are major factors contributing to the expansion of their use. Their ability to navigate through complex vascular structures with minimal trauma has made them indispensable in modern interventional radiology and cardiology. However, they can be relatively more expensive than conventional catheters, are sometimes difficult to maneuver through extremely tortuous anatomy, and have a risk of vascular damage or other complications due to their utility. Addressing these restraints requires ongoing research and development to optimize materials for durability and flexibility, as well as improve designs that enhance navigability and reduce procedure times. The development of bioabsorbable and drug-eluting microcatheters that can provide therapeutic agents directly to a targeted area reduces the need for systemic treatment and its associated side effects. Technological innovations that integrate microcatheters with imaging technologies such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or optical coherence tomography (OCT) for real-time procedure guidance also present significant potential for their improved requirement.
