The present study analyzes the unique role of organic and polymeric materials in high-performance photonic devices, which have recently appeared to gain the recognition of the electro-optical scientific and industrial communities. Organics-based devices are now experiencing accelerated development efforts as dictated by the telecommunication, optical storage and display markets. The organic active electro-optical components, such as OLEDs, will be the focus of the following report. OLEDs are seen as future replacement technology for Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) and Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), which currently dominate the growing, $40 billion annual electronic display market. The report will analyze the present status of the technological developments, gaps and unresolved issues, as well as the economical parameters of organic-based electro-optical components and devices. It will, further, provide evaluations as to future potential technological achievements and market estimates.

    This study analyzes the unique role of organic and polymeric materials in high-performance active photonic devices. Organics can be used for photonic devices both as passive elements (gratings, fibers, lenses and prisms) as well as active components (light emitting diodes, modulators, molecular switches, semiconducting lasers, plastic transistors, frequency doublers, optical memories and more).

    The advantages of organic materials as building blocks for photonic devices over current alternatives, is their promise to lead to cheaper and lighter devices, greater color variety, tunability, further miniaturization and easier processing and mechanical flexibility. Furthermore, organic materials have the potential for use in applications that are not accessible to conventional inorganic semiconductors.

    REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

    This study is a consequence of the fact that photonic devices fabricated from organic and polymeric materials now are gaining recognition and attention of the electro-optical industrial community. As a result, organic-based devices are currently experiencing accelerated development efforts as dictated by the telecommunications, optical storage and display markets.

    Advantages of the fabrication of organic materials into electro-optical devices, as well as enormous information age market potential, have long been recognized. However, only now do these technologies appear to be reaching a critical mass as the next generation in several key technologies. Driving this trend are continuing and accelerating developments in both manufacturing process technology, including novel nano designs and fabrications, and new materials systems.
