Electronic, optical, and acoustic security, detection, monitoring, and surveillance systems connote and encapsulate the whole gamut of equipment, systems, and devices used for the protection of persons, organizations and companies, commercial and social operations, civil and military installations both at national and international levels. The systems range from the personalized security systems of a home to large-scale systems for the protection of crucial national installations. They cater for the elderly person who strives for an independent life in their home; a house containing a personal response system (PRS) can trigger an alarm automatically to a remote, central monitoring control room where the system owner’s security is being continuously monitored and appropriately attended to on a 24-hour basis, seven days per week, 52 weeks per year.
The security systems include closed-circuit television cameras, which constitute ever-present, hidden eyes in places such as the city centers, underground and railway stations, banks and hospitals, critical production plants, and nuclear installations — eyes which continuously record and transmit, in microseconds, information on current developments to continuously manned law enforcement and security posts. Some systems refuse access to a room or a building because the fingerprint of the person trying to enter is not included in the database of fingerprints of authorized persons. Some systems alert the police and other security forces that one face among the thousands in a crowd, who are trying to enter a football or basketball event, belongs to a wanted man. Security systems alert airport security officers that there are minute traces of explosives hidden in the baggage on the conveyor being driven to the aircraft for loading. Systems also include voice-operated electronics, like cellular phones and land lines, which will not operate for nonowners — authorized operation requires a voiceprint engraved into the system. Modern security issues concern and affect every person.

Study Goals And Objectives
Criminals have become so sophisticated that crimes still get committed against installations even when they are continuously manned by security personnel. The reality is that traditional security systems are inadequate and ineffective when it comes to protection against the designs and devices of the present-day criminal and/or terrorist. Our goals and objectives, therefore, in preparing this report include the following:
- To provide a comprehensive list of, and information on the different security systems and equipment that can be used effectively for various applications at personal, organizational, and national levels;
- To provide information on the different vendors, including their marketing and distribution systems, as well as contact information so that they can be reached by any persons interested in their equipment;
- To present an insight into the operations and competitive strategies in the various market segments for the entrepreneur who is interested in the electronic security industry;
- To present various market data that quantify the different aspects and segments of the security market for the industrial planner; and
- To acquaint security strategists and planners with developments in the industry.
Scope And Format
In this study, efforts have been made, as much as possible, to cover the operations of major independent electronic security vendors. These include vendors that manufacture, market, and sell only electronic security equipment, as well as others who make, market, and sell security-related products. Some of the products are used both for security and other applications. For example, barcoded labels are used both security and also for material planning, tracking, and management. The various products, their applications, and respective technologies are considered in separate sections:
- After the Introduction, the report Summary follows, which provides a summary of the financial, technological, and commercial operations in the industry.
- An Industry Overview of the security industry is presented, which discusses the importance and historical perspectives of electronic security systems.
- This is followed by industry Market by Product Type and Market by Applications. Extracts and articles of various real-life applications of electronic security systems. The goal is to enable the reader to appreciate the contributions that the equipment make in civil, commercial, and military environments. Since the big players in the industry carry out both local and internal operations, sections are included on regional operations, the nature and management of risks encountered in their international operations.
- In Technology, the workings of some of the described security systems will be touched upon.
- There is also a section on Counter-Terrorism.
- Industry and Product Characteristics will examine the characteristics of the industry, as well as similarities/differences between certain products.
- Risk Management will cover security risks as it applies specifically to businesses.
- Government Regulations covers federal and state regulations concerning security products.
- International Aspects focuses in on the security industry outside of the U.S.
- Finally, the Profiles of Companies will discuss the vendors, their annual sales, some details of their products, commercial activities, and competitive strategies.
Methodology And Information Sources
Personal interviews, including telephone interviews of industry executives, observation of actual life systems, as well as research/study of websites and news/economic publications comprise the sources of information. The research method consists of collating and analyzing the information assembled from the various sources.
