Scope And Methodology
The SBI Market Profile on office furniture is a guide to growing sales and profit-oriented opportunities in this industry. This comprehensive database covers U.S. shipments, imports, factors affecting domestic demand, the cost structure of U.S. plants, the competitive environment, distribution channels, and the home market. In addition, major manufacturers are profiled to review competitor strategies.
U.S. shipments were compiled from Department of Commerce surveys (Section 1). Shipments are for all domestic manufacturers whether plants are owned by U.S.- or foreign-based companies and whether or not plants specialize (50% or more of total facility revenues) in office furniture. Shipments were collected for wood and nonwood office furniture.
Shipments were further divided into six product sectors and 18 product lines. This data was organized into four sections — Seating Products, Desks and Tables, Storage Units and Filing Products, and Systems Furniture (Sections 2 to 5). Shipments are available in dollars and units. Price trends are also provided for each product line including an analysis of the Producer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To round out the U.S. office furniture supply, SBI compiled and analyzed U.S. import data for commercial and office seating products and other office furniture (Section 6). Imports were analyzed by product and major country of origin. Import data is derived from U.S. Customs records.
SBI correlated these data trends with factors affecting domestic demand in order to estimate and forecast the shipment data in the previous sections (Section 7). Data trends investigated include private nonresidential and government furniture and fixture purchases, corporate profits, employment, and office building construction spending.
SBI also supplies data on the cost structure and profitability of U.S. plants specializing (50% or more of plant shipments) in the manufacture and sale of office furniture (Section 8). U.S. Department of Commerce data covering these plants are supplemented with individual company sales in order to evaluate the competitive environment and calculate top player market shares (Section 9). Company financial statistics were compiled as part of an exhaustive effort to provide competitor intelligence (Section 10). Annual reports, databases, and trade journals were searched for growth- and profit-oriented strategies of 22 manufacturers.
Distribution channels were investigated in Section 11. The changing role of independent merchant wholesalers, manufacturer sales branches, and retailers were quantified. Sales for the top wholesale and retail distributors were provided. SBI also investigated the growth strategies of leading office furniture wholesalers, retailers, and renters and leasers. The demographics of office furniture decision makers were reviewed as well. These data were analyzed from Simmons Market Research Bureau surveys. In addition, nonseating export shipments were analyzed. Section 12 reviews shipments and the developments in the home office furniture market. Tables include data from a May, 1997 survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on the demographics of at-home workers. A separate section provides data on the Canadian office furniture market (Section 13). Statistics Canada sources include data on shipments, exports, and imports.
Action-oriented executives are urged to use this comprehensive statistical database and competitor intelligence to uncover growing product lines, end-use markets, distribution channels, and profitable operating strategies. Executives are urged to compute their own company’s market share and compare their company’s own operating ratios to the industry averages as part of this process.
