The UAE’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as including computing devices,mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming products, was estimated to be worth around US$2.9bn in2008. This is expected to increase to US$3.9bn by 2013, driven by the popularity of devices such as 3Gmobile handsets, smartphones, mobile computers and LCD and plasma TV sets.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around61% of UAE consumer electronicsspending in 2008. BMI forecasts UAEdomestic market computer sales(including notebooks and accessories) ofUS$1.8bn in 2009, up from US$1.7bn in2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the2008-2013 period is forecast at about 8%,boosted by government and small andmedium-sized enterprise (SME) spendingas well as consumer segment growth.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for around 27% ofUAE consumer electronics spending in2008. The UAE domestic AV devicemarket was estimated at US$765mn. Themarket is expected to grow at a CAGR of4% between 2008-2013, to a value ofUS$919mn in that year.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted foraround 12% of UAE consumerelectronics spending in 2008. UAEmarket handset sales are expected togrow at a CAGR of 5% to US$461mn in2013, as mobile subscriber penetrationreaches 215%. Sales will be dominatedby the replacement market and driven bydemand for PDAs, smartphones and 3Ghandsets.
