Introduction

For decades, the efficacy of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for some of menopause’s most troublesome symptoms eliminated any incentive to develop new approaches to treatment. However, data questioning the safety of estrogen-containing therapies have galvanized researchers and drug developers to begin investigating new mechanisms to treat menopausal symptoms that can capitalize on the newly realized need for safer treatment options, although these agents will still be challenged by the efficacy of HRTs.
