This study investigates the impact the presence of telecommuters has on the ownership of products such as cellular phones, smartphones, PDAs and notebook PCs. At the end of 2008, there were roughly 8.6 million telecommuter households in the United States, with telecommuters defined as people who work at home three or more days a month. About 70% of all telecommuters are employed by small or medium-sized businesses (i.e., firms with fewer than 1,000 employees). This study focuses on these telecommuters, which may be more limited in their access to corporate resources, but are growing in number more rapidly than their large company counterparts. "The nature of telecommuting has been changing, with improvements in technology improving the efficiency of employees working from home," says Ray Boggs, VP of SMB and Home Office services at IDC. "However, the current downturn in the economy means that the productivity of telecommuters is even more important than it was in the past, and home offices represent a continuing opportunity for providers of technology."
