Since 2005, rumors have circulated in the market that Chinese manufacturers were about to cooperate with Japanese panel manufacturer Sharp. However, details were usually sparse, and in the end these rumors did not become reality. Recently, Japanese industry sources and media outlets have raised the possibility that Sharp will establish cooperation with the Chinese company SVA, and have provided detailed analysis of the model which might be adopted for this cooperation. With the outlines of such a cooperation thus emerging, the credibility of these reports seems to be higher than those of the rumored partnerships in the past. This report analyzes the strategic implications of a possible partnership between Sharp and SVA, and the impact it could have on the global panel industry.
