Intrusion Prevention Systems, invented in the late 1990s, are available as software systems or hardware-based solutions known as appliances, either of which work with other network equipment to automatically stop potential attacks before they are successful. Evolving from firewalls or Intrusion Detection Systems, their increased effectiveness stems from the fact that PSs actually respond to the attacks, stopping them. This report discusses the benefits of implementing IPS products, identifies the key players and trends, and provides guidance to organizations evaluating a variety of solutions.
