Like a sleeping giant, cable operators are waking up and making their collective impact felt on the communications market. With Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and its accompanying softswitch architecture reducing the cost of entry into telephony, cable companies are diving in headfirst, racing the local telephone companies to offer triple play in as many markets as possible before major telcos get legislation that eases entry into video. But having rounded out their triple play bundles by adding voice to their video and high-speed Internet service offerings, the companies are also beefing up bandwidth and expanding the reach of cable modem services as well as augmenting video offerings with products and capabilities like digital video recorders (DVRs), video on demand (VOD) and high-definition television (HDTV).

Our Cable Broadband and Telephony Sector Analysis Report is a crucial piece of business intelligence, exploring every segment of the industry. Cable companies are holding their own against video competition from satellite providers; cable broadband now outpaces DSL counts by nearly 20% and voice service is starting to account for a larger percentage of total revenue. Providers are also using their robust residential networks to capture market share among home offices and small businesses while simultaneously trying to make headway in the wholesale services market. But with competition from a new source - IP Video and fiber-to-the-home broadband from telephone companies - the future remains uncertain.
