The speech of the European Union Commissioner for Information Society and Media opening the 2008 World of Health IT Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen addressed a key issue: how to maximize opportunities provided by ehealth? As thousands of projects across Europe have witnessed, ehealth has demonstrated a direct impact on the quality, safety, and cost of healthcare, and responded to evolving needs of patients, consumers, and health professionals. How can Europe generalize the achievements of these projects and create a real economy of scale for ehealth? The commissioner outlined her view on this project by identifying two main challenges and outlining four lines of action for the ehealth market for the coming years.
