Market Overview

Greater Affordability and Increased Interoperability to Lure the Private Sector toward Smart Card-based Access Control Systems

Smart card is a secure and scalable method of physical and logical access control for various types of private organizations. Prices of smart card technology are falling and vendors are using more interoperable and open systems, which can hold dual technologies to accommodate the migration process from legacy systems. Hence, in the next four to five years, setups with a focus on security and multi-applications are likely to move toward smart card-based access control systems, which converge several functions on one card and yet offer sophisticated authentication methods.

Smart cards in access control are being increasingly used in leisure and entertainment facilities and educational or research institutions. In fact, some developing countries are leapfrogging straight to this technology, giving the older magnetic stripe cards the miss. "Low-cost contactless options have increased its uptake in large-scale events all over the world, particularly in the United States, Europe, and Asia," says the Industry Analyst, Michelle Foong. "These include sporting events, major conferences, live performances, and other events where crowd control and security are key considerations."

Government Support for and Installations of Access Control Technology Encourage Private Sector to Follow Suit

Growth in the access control market globally is currently driven by positive spillover effects of government mandates and initiatives; and increased mobility of workers, resulting in a greater need for securing access to corporate resources. Various government initiatives such as the U.S. Common Access Card (CAC), and Civil Service Card in Singapore and Indonesia raises awareness and educates the market about the benefits of secure and scalable systems such as smart cards. Over time, the drop in prices and the move to more open and standardized platforms will encourage more applications in the private sector.

"In countries where government agencies actively use smart cards for door access, there has been a marked increase in private sector adoption of smart cards in access control," notes the analyst. "This proves that the usage in government and state agencies has a substantial effect on the overall adoption of access control technology in a country although there are no specific mandates for the private sector to do so."
