The improvement in May shopper traffic resulted in many retailers enjoying better same-store sales results. Retailers best able to convert shoppers to buyers continue to be those serving higher-income shoppers. Results suggest that Down Market shoppers continue to spend cautiously. Focus groups held last week with supercenter shoppers for TNS Retail Forward’s Shopper Perspectives revealed high levels of price sensitivity among these customers, including a willingness to postpone discretionary purchases to obtain rock-bottom prices.
