Based on interviews with over 200 U.S. cardiologists, this report summarizes the results
of IMV Medical Information Division’s 2006 study of present and future cardiac imaging
practices from the cardiologists’ perspective. The objective of this study is to provide
insights on U.S. cardiologists’ roles in ordering and performing diagnostic cardiac
imaging procedures today and in the near future, specifically focusing on the next three
years. The report covers cardiologists’ preferences in diagnostic imaging modalities for
evaluating major cardiac conditions such as Angina, Congestive Heart Failure,
Myocardial Infarction, and Ventricular Fibrillation, and for follow-up imaging on post-
CABG and post-PCI patients. It provides specific details on order volumes, referral
rates, and procedure locations used for cardiologists’ orders involving coronary
angiography (cardiac cath), SPECT and SPECT/CT, Coronary CT Angiography, CT
Calcium Scoring, MR and MR Angiography, PET and PET/CT. The report also describes
trends that will influence cardiologists’ future adoption of advanced diagnostic imaging
modalities. The data collection for this study was conducted from mid-June 2006 through
August 2006.
