Scope And Methodology

The SBI Market Profile on Commercial Refrigeration Equipment is a guide to the growth- and profit-oriented opportunities in this industry. This comprehensive database covers U.S. shipments, exports, imports, end-use market purchases, the cost structure of domestic plants, and the competitive environment. In addition, the leading manufacturers are profiled in order to review major competitor strategies.

Commercial refrigeration equipment industry trends are analyzed in the Executive Summary Section (Section 1). SBI compiled U.S. Department of Commerce statistics on U.S. shipments, exports, and imports in order to calculate U.S. market sales. Similar calculations were made for the industry’s major market sectors: display cabinets and cases, water coolers, beverage dispensers, ice-making machines, and refrigeration system components.

Section 2 analyzes overall U.S. trends from Department of Commerce surveys. Shipment data is for all domestic manufacturers, whether plants are owned by U.S.- or foreign-based companies and whether or not plants specialize (50.0% or more of total facility revenues) in one of the industry’s product sectors. Pricing trends are analyzed from Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys.

SBI also evaluated U.S. export and import trends in Sections 3 and 4. Import data is derived from U.S. Customs records, while export shipments are compiled by the Department of Commerce. Trade statistics are also organized by industry sector and by major country of destination and origin.

Separate sections (5 to 8) investigate market trends for the major industry sectors. Sections analyze domestic shipments, exports, and imports for display cabinets and cases, beverage dispensing equipment, ice-making machines, and refrigeration system components. The sections track dollar and quantity shipments and pricing trends.

Section 9 analyzes end-use market potential and factors affecting demand. SBI calculates market sales for supermarket, convenience/specialty store, and foodservice users. Section data trends include the number of commercial buildings with refrigeration equipment, the number of food marketing facilities and sales, food group production trends, foodservice industry trends, refrigerated warehouse industry trends, refrigeration contractor construction work, vending machine shipments, ice maker shipments, and refrigerated truck trailer shipments. Data trends are from various government surveys. In addition, data was collected and analyzed for commercial refrigeration equipment and supplies wholesalers (Section 10).

SBI also utilized Department of Commerce surveys to investigate the industry’s cost structure and plant profitability (Section 11). Data trends include the number of plants specializing in the industry’s product lines, plant shipments, and the share of shipments allocated to payroll and material costs. From this analysis, SBI calculated the industry’s gross plant profit margin. In addition, the industry’s labor situation was evaluated, including the number of employees, shipments per employee, and production workers’ average wages and weekly hours. The industry’s capital spending trends were analyzed as well.

SBI supplements U.S. Department of Commerce data with individual company sales data in order to calculate company market share. Company sales statistics are compiled as part of an effort to provide competitor intelligence on the industry’s leading manufacturers (Section 12). Annual reports, databases, and trade journals were searched for growth- and profit-oriented strategies.

Action-oriented executives are urged to use this comprehensive statistical database and competitor information to develop new products, target growing end-use markets, expand foreign market sales, and initiate profitable operating strategies. Executives are urged to compute their own company’s market share and compare their company’s own operating ratios to the industry average as part of this process.
