The western European market for chilled prepared foods was worth over EUR14.62bn in 2005. This figure of EUR14.62bn covers all of the major western European markets, namely the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Belgium and Netherlands. In most instances, market volume data is not available, although sales are believed to be worth in excess of 3 million tonnes.
The UK has the region’s largest market, with value sales worth over EUR7.95bn in 2005, due to the high household penetration of both microwave ovens and refrigerators, along with the trend towards convenience foods and the decline of formal mealtimes. Analysed by sector, the chilled prepared bakery products category is the largest, accounting for around a quarter (25%) of market value, although sales of chilled prepared sandwiches and savoury pastry products remain heavily biased towards the UK and France.
This report updates the previous LFI study carried out in 2003, and provides an indication of where the market is heading at this crucial time, as some consumers now appear to be turning away from certain convenience foods. The report covers the following product sectors:
