The topic of this report is the Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, its specifics, market aspects and applications. The report details one of the important UWB applications - Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), and provides specifics of this application, relevant standards and so on. Though the UWB WSN market is in its infancy - mostly due to regulatory barriers similar to all other UWB applications- we think it is necessary to stress the importance of these technologies symbiosis, and to show its perspectives.

Due to a number of very attractive features that we are discussing in this report, UWB allows to make their applications cost efficient and attractive to users. RFID, security, radar, emergency radio and others are among these applications. Not only UWB can widen a spectrum of applications in homeland security, it also adds an economy efficiency factor in the design of radar and communications devices. WSNs, which are spreading in the military and commercial sectors of our economy, and support detection, gathering and transmission of data from various sources and in various environments, gain many attractive features when using UWB as well. Inherent security, extremely low power consumption and ability to work in multipath conditions are just a few examples of WSNs with UWB. The FCC in our country and regulatory bodies around the world have a strict policy regarding UWB spectrum utilization (this is discussed in a report). As with other applications, which require the FCC approval on a case-by-case basis, growth of UWB application in WSNs depends on the regulatory bodies polices.

Additional Information

The report researches the UWB and WSN technologies and markets landscape by examining the current state of the technology, standards, market and the industry. The study looks to provide a deeper understanding to wide audience UWB specifics and its WSN application, advantages and limitations. It is concentrated on the successes and limitations encountered with the current iterations of available UWB products. It also looks further, until 2010-2011, with market forecast and technologies on the horizon.

In particular, this report goal was to addresses the following aspects:
  • UWB products market characteristics, their specifics, and market segmentation
  • Technology standards and associated issues
  • Market barriers
  • Applications, with concentration on WSN
  • Current implementation
  • Market players and their products.
Research Methodology
Considerable research was done using the Internet. Information from various Web sites was studied and analyzed; evaluation of publicly available marketing and technical publications was also conducted. Telephone conversations and interviews were held with industry analysts, technical experts and executives. In addition to these interviews and primary research, secondary sources were used to develop a more complete mosaic of the market landscape, including industry and trade publications, conferences and seminars.

The overriding objective throughout the work has been to provide valid and relevant information. This has led to a continual review and update of the information content.

Target Audience
This report provides the UWB technology and market analysis and assessments that are useful for service providers, retail operators, vendors, network operators and managers, investors and end users seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the UWB opportunities and barriers. It also details the WSN UWB application.

For systems vendors, integrators and others, the report provides an analysis and assessment of competing UWB products currently available as well as an estimation of the overall opportunities in the coming years. The end users can gain a more thorough understanding of product's market and capabilities as well as the economics of using UWB to improve cost efficiency.

The report is also useful for organizations involved in the development or utilization of WSNs.
