Countries covered: Asia
Demand for air travel in Asia has, despite numerous crises (eg 9/11, the Bali bombing, SARS and avian flu), shown considerable resilience and recovered quickly, with a year-on-year growth of over 6% in many countries. Current and future growth in the area will continue to be affected, and by 2020 the number of world cities with over 20 million inhabitants will rise to 16, of which ten will be in the Asia-Pacific region. This population growth, combined with an expansionist tourism industry and thriving economic environment, will position Asia-Pacific as a main target for massive growth in the aviation sector. The region will experience huge changes, particularly as the China market develops. According to the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), by 2014, 871 million passengers will be travelling to, within and from Asia-Pacific - over double the number in 1999. By 2022, eight of the top ten airports using large aircraft (over 500 seats) will be in Asia and nine of the top ten large aircraft routes will serve Asia.
