It has been estimated that 60 percent to 80 percent of Americans are likely to experience an episode of disabling low back pain at least once in their lifetime. The condition costs the economy about $60 billion due to lost work, medical costs, and rehabilitation. Till date, the ultimate option available to patients suffering from chronic spine-related problems, such as low-back pain, has been 'welding' together the adjacent vertebral bodies through a process called spine fusion. Although spine fusion is the current gold standard for spine care, it has several drawbacks. It disrupts the biomechanics of the spine and promotes degeneration of adjacent discs. Fusion also restricts motion of the spine units. Additionally, post-fusion surgery, patients may have to undergo several months of rehabilitation. A new generation of devices that will enable 'non-fusion' treatment of the spine is evolving. These devices will restore the natural biomechanics and motion of the spine. However, surgeons are of the opinion that fusion will still remain an important aspect of spine care since non-fusion treatment may not address all orthopedic problems of the spine. Also non-fusion treatment of the spine may not be suitable for patients above 60 years of age.
This research offers a detailed analysis of the various segments of the non-fusion devices market for spine procedures in the U.S. and Asia. The key participants in each segment are identified, and their strengths and weaknesses are discussed. Input from spine surgeons in the U.S. and Asia captured their expectations and concerns regarding the non-fusion spine devices. Feedback from spine surgeons also helped in making realistic market forecasts for the various non-fusion spine devices. In addition, the effect of the changing U.S. demographic landscape, especially the effect of the 'baby boomer' wave, on the future demands on the spine surgery markets are analyzed.
