Abstract

Activity in the healthy food and drinks arena has been dominated by functional and fortified foods in recent years and innovation in the low-fat and low-calorie markets has slowed considerably from the levels seen in the 1990s. However, more recently, with growing obesity levels causing concern around the world, interest in low and light foods has been renewed. At the same time, the growing popularity of alternative dieting methods, including the well-known Atkins diet has raised further issues regarding weight control and health.
Leatherhead’s research presents some background information on obesity, popular diets, and UK consumer attitudes to weight control before turning, in more detail, to the international markets for low and light foods in seven key countries around the world.
Leatherhead conducted its own consumer research in the UK to assess attitudes to weight control. Of the 72% of UK consumers who think they are overweight and should lose some weight, only around 41% are actively trying to do so through diet changes.
