Abstract

Introduction
Several landmark clinical trials studying the benefits of anti-hypertensives beyond blood pressure control have recently been reported. CHARM, COMET and EPHESUS focused on heart failure, where unmet need remains extremely high. EUROPA, looked at the coronary artery disease population to assess whether the benefits of ramipril in HOPE also apply to another ACE inhibitor in lower-risk patients.

Scope
* Provides a critical analysis of the commercial impact of these trials, along with updated sales forecasts to 2011 for the drugs concerned.

* Assesses the potential for ARBs and eplerenone in heart failure and the factors that will limit their uptake despite the CHARM and EPHESUS results?

* Evaluates the robustness are the COMET results and the extent to which physicians using metoprolol in heart failure will now switch to carvedilol?

* Discusses whether EUROPA will dramatically expand the use of ACE inhibitors and the market implications of the trial for perindopril and ramipril?

Report Highlights
Development for additional indications has been the key means of expanding the patient potential of anti-hypertensives and has become a prerequisite for success in this highly competitive market.

CHARM, COMET, EPHESUS and EUROPA will have a significant impact on the market, driving overall growth and increasing the market share of the study drugs. Datamonitor forecasts that total sales of the four main drugs in these trials will grow from $2.6 billion in 2002 to $10.9 billion in 2010.

Reasons to Purchase
* Understand the importance of the CHARM, COMET, EPHESUS and EUROPA trials and effectively anticipate their impact on the anti-hypertensives market.

* Identify the factors that may constrain the uptake of these drugs in the trial indications studied.

* Access updated forecasts to 2011 for the key drugs involved in these trials
