CONTACT INFORMATION AbstractThe TIPP Home Computer Purchase Outlook Index is an early indicator of consumer spending in the home computer segment of the economy and has been published since April 2002. The index tracks the likelihood of consumers to purchase a computer in the next six months, with purchase intent expressed as a score that ranges between 0 and 100. Higher index readings correspond to higher expectations to purchase a computer within the next 6 months. A Random Digit Dial (RDD) is used for data collection. The sample size for each survey is over 900 nationwide respondents. The index is computed based upon the responses to the following question: “How likely is it that you will buy a desktop computer or a laptop computer in the next six months? Would you say you are Very Likely, Somewhat Likely, Not Very Likely, or Not At All Likely?” In addition, the survey also includes questions on brand name preference and the intended method of purchase (I.e., whether purchases will be made in a store, online, or elsewhere), important computer features and planned computer-related activities. The index and its movements are projectable to the home computer market consisting of over 105 million U.S. households.
