Abstract

Introduction:
The December 2002 patent expiry of Claritin is severely impacting the antihistamine market. Schering-Plough is expected to lose nearly 70% of the profits generated by this drug that represented nearly 1/3 of the company’s 2001 revenue. Increased generic competition and decreased coverage by managed care will drive down profits of the remaining competitors, including Pfizer and Aventis. The market will decline at a CAGR of -3.9% between 2001 and 2009 due to this blockbuster patent expiry.

Scope:
* Detailed analysis of Claritin’s standing in the current antihistamine market and events leading up to its switch to OTC

* Case study of a past successful patent expiry

* Evaluation of Schering-Plough’s strategies to recoup sales lost as Claritin’s patent expires and the effects of these strategies on future revenues

* Examination of the effects of Claritin’s OTC availability on the overall allergic rhinitis market

* Market scenario forecast to 2009

Report Highlights:
Schering Plough’s strategies to limit the damage from blockbuster drug Claritin’s December 2002 patent expiry and switch to OTC status will be largely unsuccessful

Managed care organizations are taking full advantage of Claritin’s patent expiry and the entire antihistamine market will be severely impacted as a result. Co-pays are being raised for all non-sedating antihistamines and it is speculated that some insurance companies will remove them from formularies altogether.

The FDA approval of a number of generic formulations of Claritin in December 2002 and early 2003 will rub salt in Schering-Plough’s wounds. Generic versions of loratadine from J&J, Wyeth, Teva Pharmaceuticals and other manufacturers will be priced below OTC Claritin and further reduce the value of the antihistamine market.

Reasons to Purchase:
* Learn what Schering-Plough is doing to keep lost revenue to a minimum as Claritin's patent expires

* Quantify the impact of the availability of generic loratadine and decreased coverage by managed care on the allergic rhinitis market

* Discover where growth in the allergic rhinitis market will occur as this segment continues to mature

* Profit from Schering-Plough's losses as their biggest blockbuster loses control of the market
