Abstract

Marine biotechnology, i.e. the discovery and application of products and processes derived from marine organisms, is an old/new field whose roots go back thousands of years, but which is still in its infancy. While marine biotechnology today accounts for at most one-tenth of total biotechnology sales, marine organisms account for the bulk of the Earth's biological resources. The global market for marine biotechnology products and processes is estimated at $2.4 billion in 2002, a 9.4% increase from 2001. The U.S. market in 2002 is estimated at $804 million or 33% of the total. The goals of this study include providing the reader with an understanding of commercial potential associated with the biodiversity that exists in the marine environment and an overall, quantitative view of the emerging U.S. marine biotechnology industry and potential domestic and international markets for U.S. marine biotechnology-related products and services. Market forecasts are provided through 2007.
