Abstract

Understanding the role of genetic variation is expected to profoundly change our understanding of human disease and the practice of medicine in the years to come. Genotyping is the assignment of different variants in an otherwise conserved DNA region, and is used for the identification of susceptibility genes in case/control populations. SNP is the most common variation that occurs in DNA. Because of their ubiquity, SNPs provide a powerful approach to understanding the connection between genetic variation and its physical manifestation. As such, they are the focus of much attention in the pharmacogenomic arena.

Life science suppliers are positioning themselves to support SNP genotyping—especially in the pharmaceutical segment—with a broad spectrum of products and services. Conventional wisdom rightly assumes that new technologies providing high-throughput and cost effectiveness are the paramount needs of researchers seeking a practical means of mutation detection. However, SNP genotyping methods vary depending on the scale and the scientific question a project is trying to answer. When contemplating the landscape of these SNP genotyping methods, one can become easily overwhelmed by the options available. Researchers face alternatives at every step of the process, from the selection of which molecular technique to use, to a myriad of choices for labeling, detection and scoring. This report, based on a detailed 32-question survey of over 540 life scientists engaged in SNP genotyping, clearly highlights the complexity of the market for both scientists and suppliers. Looking at the entire market potential, this report not only reflects the experience and opinions of 166 respondents who primarily outsource their SNP genotyping but 377 respondents who currently perform SNP genotyping in their own lab/group.

The tremendous attention and money directed towards pharmacogenomics is likely to overshadow other applications of SNP genotyping and attract both new customers and suppliers to the field. In this expanding market, successful competitors are likely to be those who practice careful positioning and appeal to the extremely diverse needs of their customers.
