Abstract

In 2000/2001, revenue from English and Scottish League football clubs was £1.48bn. This represents a 138% rise from the 1995/1996 season. Income is generated from a number of areas, including match receipts, sponsorship, broadcasting, corporate hospitality, merchandising and publishing. In 2000/2001, gate receipts and broadcasting income made up the majority of the market value.

In 1997, Key Note reported a change in the image of football from the 1980s. This trend has continued in almost all areas of the game. Attendances are increasing in all divisions, although to differing degrees. In 1990, The Taylor Report necessitated investment in stadium development throughout the divisions. In 2002, almost all 92 football clubs in England have, or are in the process of, relocating or redeveloping their existing grounds. This report covers the market.
