AbstractGPS may soon be as commonplace
as the mobile phone
In 15 to 20 years time, consumers will not be able to contemplate returning to a scenario in which precise location information was no longer available
In the early 1980s, when mobile phones first started appearing on the market, they were regarded as luxury items — 20 years later, they are a staple consumer product in many countries of the world. Most governments now regard Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as a utility on a par with mobile telephony, and the majority of analysts believe that GPS will follow a similar trend.
Market intelligence providers, Key Note, have published a special edition market report, Global Positioning Systems. The 219- page report provides statistics and conclusions, attained through extensive research into this dynamic market. The 58 forecast tables included in the report — 55 of which were exclusively commissioned — examine the current markets and the future prospects in great detail, and present individual country forecasts for 59 countries in five geographical regions.
The potential market for an inexpensive, easy-to-use terrestrial navigation system is very large. There are approximately 200 million vehicle users in Western Europe alone, and there is an increasing need for traffic information and navigation solutions.
Forecasts for the GPS market vary considerably, and the market has not yet performed as was previously expected, however, many analysts continue to make rather bullish statements about its future. For this report, the author Paul Tucker used a mathematical forecast method adapted from one he utilised in a previous title relating to intelligent transport systems (published in 1998 by The Financial Times).
Factors such as the relatively new nature of the market, its evolving technology and the creation of augmentation services, have led analysts to adopt very different views as to the development of the market. The US GPS Industry Council has quoted figures for GPS equipment sales worldwide as being around $6bn in 1999 — rising to $16.5bn for 2003.
Key Note believes that while these figures may be close to the mark, the US share of the GPS market is not the 50% expected by the US Department of Commerce for 2002. Key Note expects that 68.2% of the 2002 sales of GPS equipment will derive from the Pacific Rim. However, Key Note is in agreement with the majority of analysts in forecasting that the market will show strong annual growth, and expects a mature market size of $757bn in 2017.
