Abstract

This IDC study breaks down the previously reported relational database management systems (RDBMS) 2011 market revenue into license and maintenance revenue and shows vendor shares of license revenue altogether and by operating environment. It also offers observations on the overall market and the individual operating environments and concludes with future-looking analysis and advice.

"There is a new dynamism in the relational database management systems market borne of new developments in the areas of in-memory database (IMDB), cloud computing, and Big Data," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Database Management and Data Integration Software Research at IDC. "These factors have opened new opportunities for both new and established RDBMS vendors. As new entrants offer RDBMS software with dynamic schemas, IMDB support, and elastic scalability, the top 10 players are scrambling to keep ahead of the pack, with innovations of their own."
