Abstract

Despite liberalisation Slovakia’s incumbent maintains a near monopoly of the fixed-line market. Alternative operators have entered the market although competitive pressures have forced a number of mergers and acquisitions, resulting in a small number of larger alternative operators. The telecoms regulator has commenced a second round of market reviews, the results of which should improve market conditions and stimulate competition. The report outlines Slovakia’s fixed-line telecoms and IT market in 2011, providing an overview of the regulatory environment, profiles of the major fixed line market operators and a variety of useful statistics.

Key developments:

Slovak Telecom and T-Mobile Slovensko integrate; regulator transposes new NRF into law; state’s sale of remaining interest in Slovak Telecom delayed until after March 2012 elections; Slovak Telekom contracts Ericsson to manage its fixed line network; regulator’s market data to June 2012; telcos’ operating data to September 2012; market developments to December 2012.

Companies covered in this report include:

Slovak Telecom, O2, GTS Slovakia.
