AbstractKey Note estimates that around 650,000 fax (facsimile) machines and around 196,000 photocopiers were sold in the UK in 1997. The value of the market, in terms of end-user prices, is estimated to be around £575m for photocopiers and £250m for fax machines. These estimates also include multifunction products (MFPs).
By the end of 1995, the installed base of fax machines in the UK had reached 1.8 million units and is estimated to have doubled since then, due to the development of the domestic fax sector and the continued growth of the small office/home office (SoHo) sector. Sales of plain paper fax machines are strong, due to the replacement of old thermal models by the corporate office sector. The reduction in sales of thermal machines to this sector has been compensated by a strong demand for thermal models from the home and SoHo sectors.
The copier market is showing some growth in volume, but falling prices for hardware and servicing mean that the value is flat, at best, despite several trends which are helping to boost the value of sales. These include a strong growth in colour copiers, growth in the high-volume sector, a gradual trend from analogue to digital machines and a growth in products which can be connected to computer networks.
After a slow start, the demand for MFPs is increasing. So far, these appliances have appealed mainly to the small business and SoHo sector, which require fax machines, that can double as copiers and scanners, for occasional use. A large number of MFPs aimed at the corporate office sector were launched in 1998, including mid-volume copier/printers, which can be included in a computer network.
Key Note expects prices to continue to fall on a like-for-like basis, and both sectors to decline in value from 1998 to 2002. Forecasts for copiers and faxes over this period, suggest a decrease in value of 0.5% (£200m) and 5% (£600m), respectively. Overall volume sales are also likely to fall. Technologies will merge and there will be strong growth in multifunction products, at the expense of both the stand-alone fax sector and the stand-alone copier sector.
