Abstract

The UAE’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected at around US$2.8bn in 2010. This expected to increase to US$3.7bn by 2014, driven by the popularity of new electronic devices such as LED and 3G TV sets, 3G mobile handsets, smartphones, feature-rich notebooks and Blu-ray format DVD players. In 2010, modest single-digit growth in consumer electronics sales is forecast, following a market pick-up in the final quarter of 2009. Holiday season sales were satisfactory for most retailers and vendors, as retail footfall reached a 2009-year high in December. Sales were sluggish again in January, however, and while large consumer electronics retailers like Jacky’s and Jumbo Electronics expected better times ahead, they remained cautious.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 57% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2009. BMI forecasts UAE domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$1.6bn in 2010, up from US$1.5bn in 2009. Computer hardware compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2010-2014 period is forecast at about 8%. Stronger demand in the notebook sector was the main 2009 growth driver, as consumers felt the benefits of aggressive channel promotions.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 30% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2009. The UAE addressable AV device market is projected at US$855mn in 2010. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% between 2010-2014, to a value of US$1.1bn in 2014. The roll-out of HD TV broadcasting in the UAE will drive demand for premium TV sets and Blu-ray devices.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 13% of UAE consumer electronics spending in 2009. Following a reverse in 2009, UAE market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% to US$416mn in 2014, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 254%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market and revenues driven by demand for smartphones and 3G handsets, despite continued problems concerning availability of the iPhone.
