AbstractOman’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is forecast at around US$487mn in 2010. This expected to increase to US$600mn by 2014, driven by new technologies and digital lifestyle products such as LCD TV sets, feature-rich notebook computers and SLR digital cameras.Growth is forecast to pick up again after 2010, as new technologies and features - such as higher capability netbooks, LED TV sets and feature-rich smartphones - and the roll-out of 3G services act as demand drivers. Oman will sustain a steady, if unspectacular, economic recovery through 2010, building on rising oil price, increased oil production and a concerted government counter-cyclical spending effort. An evolving retail landscape will help to stimulate consumer electronics sales, with a growing population attracting more large retailers into the market. Computers Computer hardware accounted for around 36% of Omani consumer electronics spending in 2009. BMI forecasts Oman’s domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$180mn in 2010, up from US$173mn in 2009. Computer hardware compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2010-2014 period is forecast at about 6%, with drivers including the government’s ‘Towards Digital Oman’ strategy. Wireless capabilities will boost demand for PCs, stimulated by new infrastructure investment. AV Devices AV devices accounted for around 29% of Omani consumer electronics spending in 2009. Oman’s addressable AV device market is estimated at US$144mn in 2010. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% between 2010-2014 and growth drivers will include LCD TV sets and Blu-ray format DVD players. Mobile Handsets Mobile handset sales accounted for around 35% of Omani consumer electronics spending in 2009. Oman’s market handset sales are expected to grow to US$201mn in 2014, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 174.3%. There will be growing demand for PDAs, smartphones and 3G handsets, as the number of 3G customers reaches around 13% of total mobile users by the end of 2014. Oman is in the regional vanguard of the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) trend, following the launch of a third virtual operator, and this could lead to a more segmented handset market.
