AbstractSouth Africa’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is projected at US$6.7bn in 2010. This expected to increase to US$9.6bn by 2014, driven by demographics, product innovation, rising incomes, and rising computer penetration. In 2009 growth slowed notably as a result of the global economic situation, and the consumer is likely to remain under pressure until at least 2010. BMI projects that consumer electronics spending growth will remain in high single digits in 2010. Higher household indebtedness and tighter credit availability will be restraints on growth, balanced by falling prices of notebooks and flat screen TV sets, and government digital divide programmes Computers Computer hardware accounted for around 61% of South African consumer electronics spending in 2009. BMI projects South African domestic market computer hardware sales of US$4.1bn in 2010, up from US$3.8bn in 2009. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2010- 2014 period is forecast at about 10%, thanks to rising computer penetration, falling prices and vendor and retailer promotions. AV AV devices accounted for around 18% of South Africa’s consumer electronics spending in 2009. South Africa’s domestic AV device market is projected at US$1.2bn in 2010. However, a recent legal challenge to the government’s migration process has raised doubts about this schedule. Mobile Handsets Mobile handset sales accounted for around 21% of South Africa’s consumer electronics spending in 2009.
