Poland Shipping Report Q2 2010Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Feb. 22, 2010 - 93 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractThe quarter has been marked by a number of positive developments in Poland's port and shipping sector. The port of Gdansk's Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT Gdansk) was added to Maersk Line's AE10Asia-Europe service. The inclusion of the port on the route means Polish importers and exporters nolonger rely on feeder services or land transhipment to German ports to trade with Asian markets. WithDCT Gdansk's participation on the route, the port has reached a milestone, becoming Poland's largestcontainer terminal and proving itself capable of handling Post-Panamax ships, which have a capacity of8,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). BMI believes adding DCT Gdansk as a direct call on one of Maersk's Asia-Europe services will helpPoland's importers and exporters as they will no longer have to rely on feeder services to German ports, which will save costs. WorldCargo News quotes DCT Gdansk's CEO, Boris Wenzel, saying 'For almost40 years, there have been direct container services linking Asia and Europe, but most terminated inGermany and relied on transhipment to serve Scandinavia and the Baltic.' We assert that this new directlink between Poland and Asia's main markets will help trade between the country and China. The AE10route offers the Chinese port of Ningbo as a stop on both the east- and westbound leg of the service, which will give Polish importers and exporters access to the Chinese market. The service from China willalso bring Finnish and Russian cargo to DCT. In a separate development, the feeder operator Unifeeder, according to WorldCargo News, has opened anew twice-weekly feeder service between Gdansk and Baltiysk in Russia's Kaliningrad region. From a shipping perspective, Denmark's Unifeeder has acquired Poland's largest feeder service operator,Inter Marine Container Lines (IMCL). The deal will expand Unifeeder's presence in the Polish feedermarket. The company currently offers Szczecin as a port of call, while IMCL calls at Gdansk and Gdynia. BMI also notes that there is some duplication in the services offered by the two, which will enableUnifeeder to either cut back on vessels or expand its coverage of certain ports. In the Q210 Poland Shipping Report we forecast growth in the country's maritime sector, as tradevolumes look set to begin to recover from the downturn of 2009. Imports and exports are expected toincrease by 3% and 4% year-on-year (y-o-y) respectively in 2010, and this will have a knock-on effect atthe country's ports, as cargo volumes passing through the ports increase. BMI's shipping team forecasts that one of Poland's main ports, the port of Gdansk, will experience y-o-ythroughput growth in total tonnage of 5.2%, while container volumes are expected to increase by 9.1% in2010. This continues 2009's upward trend at the port, which despite the downturn in global trade volumes andthe decline of Poland's total trade by 12.5% saw the port of Gdansk's total tonnage increase by 6.1% to18.9mn tonnes and the facility's container throughput volumes increase by 29.6% to 240,623TEUs,helped by Maersk Line's move to the DCT Gdansk starting December 2008. BMI's Q210 Poland Shipping Report not only analyses the environment in the Polish shipping market in2010, but looks at developments going forward into the mid term (2011-2014) and considers whether thecountry's trade volumes will increase adequately to allow Poland's ports to reclaim their pre-downturnthroughput levels. The report also contains an in-depth analysis of Poland's main ports, the port of Gdansk and the port ofGdynia. We offer an overview of the ports' infrastructure, and consider whether they will be able to copewith cargo growth or whether congestion could become an issue. The ports' expansion and developmentplans are also reviewed, along with the facilities' links to the rest of the country's freight transport. The Q210 Poland Shipping Report contains detailed company overviews of the top 11 global containerlines. Our shipping desk has prepared an analysis of these companies' varying downturn strategies, andwe offer our views and predictions on what 2010 holds for these lines.
