AbstractSingapore’s telecoms operators continue to work within the confines of a highly competitive and mature industry. Mobile penetration rates are set to reach 140% by the end of 2009, according to BMI’s latest mobile forecasts, encouraged by the aggressive price plans introduced by operators, as well as the growing demand for 3G services in the form of mobile broadband. With a total of 2.927mn 3G subscribers at the end of September 2009, BMI forecasts that by the end of 2009, there will be a total of 3.131mn subscribers, to account for 45.6% of the total, before rising to 103.6% as of 2014. As the mobile industry looks towards the future, it has an eye on LTE, the next generation network standard being adopted by its regional peers such as NTT DoCoMo of Japan. Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), the incumbent telecoms operator, has announced that it will introduce the technology in 2010 across not only its domestic market but also through the Asia region. In November 2009, the operator awarded a contract to Alcatel-Lucent for the supply of LTE equipment for use in trials. The results of these trials will be shared with the group's operations in other countries, enabling them to quickly migrate to 4G mobile technology. The value of Alcatel-Lucent's contract was not disclosed, but it will provide radio access, packet core, IP routing and operation systems to the group. The trials are expected to run for between six and nine months. SingTel hopes to improve its understanding of how the technology works and how it may be best adapted to suit particular operating environments, which vary widely across its Asian operations. Other contracts awarded to upgrade download speeds for mobile networks were awarded by M1 to Huawei Technologies. In October 2009, The operator, further upgraded its HSPA+ network to support mobile broadband download speeds of up to 28Mbps in selected areas of the country. The increased speed was achieved by the installation of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO), making the network the first in Asia to adopt this technology.
Demand for wireless broadband is on the rise with a total of 4.398mn subscribers at the end of September 2009, according to the regulatory authority IDA. This includes internet accessed over mobile handsets and laptops as well as other wireless devices. Over the year, the number of wireless broadband subscribers rose by 31.3% y-o-y. Wireless broadband is helping to boost the number of broadband subscribers in the country, which reached a total of 5.474mn subscribers as of September 2009. As demand for traditional types such as ADSL falls, wireless broadband has arrived as the major competitor. By the end of 2009, BMI forecasts a total of broadband subscriber base of 5.664mn, representing a penetration rate of 115.4%, which is expected to reach 195.0% by the end of 2014.
