Abstract

The publishing industry’s first complete consumer-based report integrating channel, motivate and category analysis of U.S. book buyers. To collect data, we went right to the source, the American book consumer, and asked them about their book purchases.

This report provides data on who they are, what books they buy, where they buy them, how they buy them and what other activities they’re involved in that might impact their reading and book buying. While POS and other data has an important role in helping to understand the book industry, consumer data, by taking in a much wider variety of sources, provides additional actionable insights that can’t be gleaned from POS.

This report addresses questions like: How does a mystery detective buyer differ from a romance buyer? Where do these buyers shop? What motivates them to buy what they buy and where they buy it? Knowing the consumer will become ever more critical as we track the formats that book content will take going forward, and the new ways that consumers become aware of what they intend to buy and read.
