Peru Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Oct. 15, 2009 - 43 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractPeru is a small South American textile and clothing (T&C) producer, which benefited from the country’seconomic recovery in the 1990s, indigenous supplies of high quality raw materials such as cotton, alpacawool and vicuña wool, and trade agreements that give it favourable access to the US market. BMI ranks itas number 50 in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In nominal terms we estimatethat to have been worth US$1.73bn in 2008. It is one of the few Latin American countries where weexpect the 2009-2010 global recession to lead not to major falls in T&C output but to a smaller dip.Overall Peruvian T&C value added will fall by 1.8% in 2009, but recover with 6.1% growth in 2010,reflecting Peru’s resilient response to very difficult international economic conditions. We see a healthyrecovery continuing in 2011. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficultinternational economic situation. In 2009, exports will fall by 30.3% to US$1.30bn, with T&C importsfalling by 33.2% to US$635.9mn. The sector’s overall trade balance will show a surplus of US$669mn.
