AbstractColombia is a medium-sized textile and clothing (T&C) producer, with a good reputation for managementexpertise and skilled labour, which is beginning to emerge from a long period of political and drug-relatedviolence. The improving institutional and business environment may give the industry new impetus. BMIranks it as number 31 in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In nominal terms weestimate that to have been worth US$2.71bn in 2008. The industry is facing a difficult two-year period in2009-2010, as the global recession reduces demand at home and abroad. That said, we expect it to comethrough with manageable drops in output, and with relatively less difficulty than in other parts of theworld.Overall Colombian T&C value added will fall by 5.8% in 2009 and by 1.2% in 2010, reflecting verydifficult international economic conditions. We see a fairly vigorous recovery setting in from 2011, withgrowth of 6.1%. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficult internationaleconomic situation. Total exports will fall this year by 16.5% to US$2.09bn, while imports will fall by12.0% to US$1.32bn. As a result, there will be a T&C trade surplus of US$764mn.
