Abstract

Colombia’s consumer electronics devices market is estimated at US$3.4bn in 2009. Despite currenteconomic headwinds, the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7%to US$4.7bn by 2013, driven by demand for TV sets, notebook computers, digital cameras and by risingincomes and greater credit availability.

Rising unemployment, and deteriorating consumer sentiment, contributed to a deceleration in someconsumer electronics product segments in H109. 2009 and 2010 are likely to see consumers remain underpressure, with households deferring spending and negative private consumption growth. However,continued, if slower, demand growth should see per capita consumer electronics spend reach US$90 by2013.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around31% of Colombia’s consumer electronicsspending in 2008, with PC penetrationstill below 10%. BMI forecastsColombia’s domestic market computersales (including notebooks andaccessories) to around US$839 in 2009.

Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 10.8%,driven by sales of notebooks andnetbooks.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for around 48% ofColombia’s consumer electronicsspending in 2008. Colombia’s domesticAV devices market is projected atUS$1.6bn in 2009. Sales of digital TVsets and digital cameras are projected todrive AV spending growth at a projectedCAGR of 8.3% between 2008 and 2013.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted foraround 21% of Colombia’s consumerelectronics spending in 2008. Colombia’smarket handset sales are expected togrow at a CAGR of 7.4% to US$891mnin 2013, as mobile subscriber penetrationreaches 103%. Sales will be dominatedby the low-tier segment, but there will beincreasing demand for features such asMP3 players and cameras.
