Abstract

The Brazilian consumer electronics devices market is estimated at US$19.2bn in 2009. Brazil’s consumerelectronics retailers felt the pressure in H109, with PC shipments down about 15% in H109 and handsetsales also forecast to dip in 2009, before resuming growth in 2010. Sales of consumer electronics devicesslowed in Q408 as the global credit crunch and a more expensive US dollar hit consumer sentiment.The long-term trend remains positive, with demand expected to increase at a compound annual growthrate (CAGR) of 9.5% to US$27.7bn by 2013, driven by growing popularity of digital lifestyle productssuch as LCD TV sets, notebook computers, digital cameras and other products as well as rising incomesand lower prices.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around53% of Brazilian consumer electronicsspending in 2008. BMI forecasts Brazil’scomputer hardware sales (includingnotebooks and accessories) of US$10.2bnin 2009, down slightly compared with2008. PC penetration is around 25% andthis could climb to 35% by 2013.

Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 12.3%,driven by sales of notebooks andnetbooks, which currently account foraround 32% of sales.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for around 24% ofBrazil’s consumer electronics spending in2008. Brazil’s domestic AV devicemarket is projected at around US$4.7bnthis year. Digital TV set sales will be themain driver of a projected 2009-2013CAGR of 6.9%, with other growthdrivers including digital cameras andportable media devices.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted foraround 24% of Brazilian consumerelectronics spending in 2008. Brazil’smarket handset sales are expected togrow at a CAGR of 5.3% to US$5.3bn in2013, with mobile subscriber penetrationpassing 100% in 2011. Sales will bedominated by the replacement market,with growing demand for smartphonesand 3G handsets.
