This IDC Update is a summary of the key developments in the system infrastructure software market during 1H09. This edition synthesizes the key events that characterized the system infrastructure software market in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), or APEJ, region. Some noteworthy highlights include:

• Acquisition activities were not as rampant or large in terms of deal size during 1H09 as vendors were concentrating more on building solutions from previously acquired technology and resources to design solutions that help improve business sustainability throughout the economic crisis.
• Virtualization, cloud computing, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) technologies continue to gain good traction during the crux of the economic crisis in APEJ. Vendors are increasingly plugging these technologies into their portfolio with the message of lowering operational costs and easier management.
• Vendors are building on their solution-based products with features that simplify security management, more so for the small and medium-sized business (SMB) segments. The interest from businesses in managed services as a means to reduce cost has encouraged security vendors to provide them. The McAfee Web Protection Service and the Symantec Managed Endpoint Protection Services are examples of such services aimed at the SMB market.
