AbstractChile’s consumer electronics devices market, defined the addressable market for computing devices,mobile handsets and AV products, is projected at around US$2.1bn in 2009. Sales of PCs and mobilehandsets entered negative growth territory in H109 compared with the same period of 2008, leading toelectronics retailer Falabella to report just 3% top-line year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in the year throughJune 2009.Despite a challenging trading environment in2009, the market is expected to grow at a compound annualgrowth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% to US$2.7bn by 2013, driven by demand for LCD TV sets, notebook computers,digital cameras and other key products as well as by rising incomes and greater credit availability. Computers Computer hardware accounted for around 47% of Chile’s consumer electronics spending in 2008, with PC penetration still below 20%. BMI forecasts Chile’s domestic market computer sales (including notebooks andaccessories) of US$983mn in 2009. Shipments and revenues dipped sharply in H109 compared with thesame period of 2008, with netbook sales preventing a faster deceleration. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is forecast at about 8.8%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks. AV Devices AV devices accounted for around 43% of Chile’s consumer electronics spending in 2008. Chile’s domestic AV devicemarket is estimated at US$896mn this year. Although growth will be modest in 2009 and 2010, sales of flat screen TVsets are projected to drive AV spending to increase at a CAGR of 3.2% between 2009 and 2013, as Chile implements its transition towards digital broadcasting. Mobile Handsets Mobile handset sales accounted for around 10% of Chile’s consumer electronics spending in 2008. Chile’s market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.2% to US$304mn in 2013, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 104%. New operators, product and services innovation as well as expanded rural coverage will be amongpotential drivers of handset sales.
