Argentina Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Oct. 8, 2009 - 40 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractArgentina is a major-sized textile and clothing (T&C) producer with indigenous cotton and wool supplies,a wide range of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and a developed fashion and design industry. However, it is outside the small group of global industry heavyweights and has suffered significantdownsizing in recent years, given the limited size of the domestic market. BMI ranks it as number 25 inthe world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In nominal terms, we estimate that to have beenworth US$4.43bn in 2008. We expect the industry to endure hard times as it seeks to navigate a waythrough recession in 2009 and 2010. Further consolidation and restructuring is on the cards. Overall Argentina T&C value added will fall by 6.6% in 2009 and by 5.3% in 2010, reflecting verydifficult international economic conditions. We see T&C continuing to contract in 2011. The industry’strade performance will also reflect the especially difficult international economic situation. T&C exportswill fall by 28.3% to US$313.4mn this year, with imports dropping 39.2% to US$1.06bn. The industrybalance of trade will, therefore, show a deficit of US$742mn.
