Ukraine Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Oct. 8, 2009 - 40 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractUkraine is now a small-sized textile and clothing (T&C) producer, having experienced a period ofindustrial decline and loss of capacity over the last two decades. The industry was shaken by the collapseof the Soviet Union, the move from state control to a market-based economy and ongoing domesticpolitical turbulence - a transition process that does not yet seem to have reached its final destination orachieved some kind of stability. BMI ranks Ukraine as number 51 in the world in terms of T&Cmanufacturing value added. In nominal terms we estimate that to have been worth US$3.10bn in 2008,although this is an approximate figure given a lack of reliable data. We view the domestic T&C sector asparticularly exposed to the current global recession and see production falling sharply over the next twoyears.Overall, Ukraine’s T&C value added will fall by 21.2% in 2009 and by 3.2% in 2010, reflecting verydifficult international economic conditions and poor domestic macroeconomic management. After a flat2011, we see a moderate recovery setting in from 2012, with growth of 1.5%. The industry’s tradeperformance will also reflect the especially difficult international economic situation. T&C exports willfall by 21.7% this year. There will be an even sharper fall in import levels, which will contract by 28.0%.Ukraine will run a T&C trade deficit of more than US$300mn.
