Table of Contents

The report contains five sections.

  1. Introduction

    • PPAR (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor) agonists are one of the major class of compounds for the
treatment of diabetes. They are insulin sensitizers and lipid metabolism modifying compounds.

  2. Pipeline Analysis and Expectations

    • Out of 23 PPAR agonists three are in Phase III or II/III, eight are in Phase II, four in Phase I clinical trial, for
one the Investigational New Drug (IND) application was filed with the US Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) and six are in preclinical stage of development. Further analysis of targets shows that out of 23 PPAR
agonists, seven are full and partial gamma, seven dual, two pan, two gamma partial agonists/antagonists, one
alpha, one delta PPAR agonist and for three products PPAR target was not disclosed.

    • From 23 companies that are developing new PPAR agonists for the treatment of diabetes 11 are from Asia.

  3. R & D Product Profiles

    • Each product profile contains information related to indication, development status, development stage, product
characteristics, mechanism of action, results of clinical trials (efficacy and safety), origin, development company,
co-development company (if applicable), date of publishing and comments (including technology, agreements
      etc.).

  4. Company Profiles

    • This section includes each company profile and, when available, information regarding its market capital and number of employees.

  5. Investors

    • In the past at least twenty venture capital companies were investing in the past in private biopharmaceutical and
pharmaceutical companies developing PPAR agonists. The major institutional investors and their percentage of
shares in public companies are listed in Table 2.

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease that may reduce life expectancy by as much as 15 years because high blood glucose levels can damage blood vessels and nerves. The International Diabetes Institute (Australia) estimates that direct and indirect healthcare costs associated with diabetes exceed $153 billion globally.

Diabetes epidemic has a high price tag in human lives. Each year over 3.8 million deaths are attributed to diabetes. An even greater number die from diabetes-related cardiovascular diseases which are made worse by diabetes-related lipid disorders and hypertension. Practically, every 10 seconds someone dies from diabetes and diabetes-related causes. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that diabetes deaths will increase by more than 50% in the next 10 years without urgent action. Most notably, between 2006 and 2015, deaths from diabetes are projected to increase by over 80% in the upper-to-middle income countries.

Those numbers indicate that demands for new and more efficient therapies for diabetes will rise and intensify in the coming years.

Research and development pipeline of investigational products for the treatment of diabetes, which is mega pipeline,  reflects this future demand. According to the results of analysis performed by BioPolaris there are currently over 250 new products undergoing development for the treatment of diabetes, with over 10 distinct classes of products.

This report provides detailed analysis of 23 R & D PPAR agonists undergoing development by 23 companies. The BioPolaris’ analysis may help companies to adjust their research and development of PPAR agonist products for the treatment of diabetes and to find in-licensing and out-licensing opportunities and investors to plan their present and future investments in the area of diabetes
