AbstractSerbia is a small textiles and clothing (T&C) producer still struggling to overcome the upheavals of the1990s, which included the break-up of Yugoslavia, the Balkan conflict, privatisation and the reorientationof the economy. BMI ranks it as number 72 in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. Innominal terms, we estimate that to have been worth US$204mn in 2008. The natural market for SerbianT&C exports is Europe, but the continent is in a recession, meaning the outlook for the Serbian industry isfairly bleak for 2009 and 2010.Overall Serbian T&C value added will fall by 18.3% in 2009 and by 5.5% in 2010, reflecting verydifficult international economic conditions. We see a moderate recovery setting in from 2011 with growthof 3.1%. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficult international economicsituation.
