Poland Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Sep. 28, 2009 - 47 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractPoland is a major textiles and clothing (T&C) producer, currently undergoing a process of industryrestructuring and downsizing. BMI ranks it as number 18 in the world in terms of textile and clothingmanufacturing value added. In nominal terms we estimate that to have been worth US$21.03bn in 2008.Although a new generation of more dynamic and competitive textile and garment companies hasemerged, many in the industry remain underinvested and slow in their ability to respond to changingmarket conditions. Given that the European recession may affect Poland less than its neighbours, BMIexpects restructuring to continue in 2009 and 2010, but to be a somewhat easier process than earlieranticipated Overall Polish textile and clothing value added will fall by 2.9% in 2009 (less than we had at firstanticipated), and remain virtually flat in 2010 with 0.5% growth, reflecting Poland’s relatively favourablepath through very difficult international economic conditions. We believe that in subsequent years overallvalue added will achieve moderate but still positive growth. Concealed behind that headline figure will bea small cluster of more efficient companies, mostly in clothing, that will prosper. The industry’s tradeperformance will be poor over the next two years, with exports dropping by 23.3% in 2009, reflecting therecession in most, if not all, of Poland’s target markets.
