France Textiles and Clothing Report Q4 2009Published by: Business Monitor International Published: Sep. 28, 2009 - 44 Pages Table of Contents
AbstractFrance is a major textile and clothing (T&C) producer, with a strong fashion and design-led tradition thatputs it in a position to influence the entire European consumer market. BMI ranks it as number 14 in theworld in terms of textile and clothing manufacturing value added. In nominal terms we estimate that tohave been worth US$10.97bn in 2008. In common with its peers across the European Union, the Frenchindustry faces a period of retrenchment and restructuring over the next two years as the global recessiontakes its course and competition from low-cost Asian producers remains relentless. We expect companiesthat focus on niche, high-value market segments to be the most recession-proof and to positionthemselves for growth when the recovery begins.Overall French textile and clothing value added will fall by 7.6% in 2009, and again by 1.3% in 2010,reflecting difficult international economic conditions. We see a moderate recovery setting in from 2011,with growth of 1.3%. The industry’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficultinternational economic situation, with exports contracting by 23.2% to US$15.37bn, while imports willalso fall, by 15.5% to US$28.52bn.
